AOU. Check-list, 5th edition. 1957. The one with the subspecies. Very
good condition, one of the nicest I have seen. Prices for this book are
going up fast because the word is out that the seventh edition won't
include subspecies. $49.00

Alden, P. 1969. Finding Birds in Western Mexico. Sure, this is somewhat
out of date, but the 9 fabulous color plates of many Mexican species by
John O'Neill are not. Autographed to someone by Alden. 138 page
paperbound. $35.00

Arbib, R. The Lord's Woods. 1971. Bob Arbib was the editor of American
Birds magazine and a great nature writer. This is the story of his own
coming of age as a birder, and the good times in and ultimate fate of a
tract of forest where he first discovered the joy of birds. Hardbound with
protected d.j. A very hard-to-find book. $19.00

Audubon Field Notes. vol. 11 only (1957). These are well-used copies in
good-very good condition. $10.00

Biolog. Vols. 1-14, 16-17. The publication of the University of Portland
(and its predecessor "Columbia University") biology club, 1934-1951,
missing one volume. Includes about ten articles on birds and
ornithologists; the bulk are general biology and pre-med related. $35

Cornell U. 1977. The Living Bird annual. One of the beautiful and
informative series. This one has articles on Williamson's Sapsucker
breeding behavior, seabirds of Puerto Rico, breeding strategies of birds of
prey, breeding ecology of Wilson's Warbler in the Sierras, a fascinating
piece on traveling with Fuertes in Abyssinia, nutcracker foraging, the
Noisy Miner, the impact of people on nesting success, motmot biology and
passerine growth. The color plates are a Wood Duck head by Sutton,
Williamson's Sapsucker by Dilger (plate has pen mark), peregrines by Guy
Coheleach, bustard head by Fuertes, Noisy Miners by Slater and stunning
Blue-crowned Motmots by McGowan. Cover is intact but scuffed. $10.00

Dement'ev and Gladkov. 1968 translation. Birds of the Soviet Union.
Volume 1 (total of six volumes), covering hawks, owls, caprimulgids,
woodpeckers, cuckoos, swifts, and a few others. $25.00

Gabrielson, I. and S. Jewett. 1940. Birds of Oregon. This is unique. It
bears the inscription "inscribed for John Scharff at Malheur Lake
Headquarters on June 13, 1948 /s/ Ira N. Gabrielson". Scharff managed the
refuge for decades and the waterfowl festival is named for him. It is also
signed "Stanley B. Jewett, October 16, 1954" shortly before he died. It is
stamped "J. C. Scharff." There can be few association copies of this book
with such a remarkable meaning for Oregon bird enthusiasts. The map is
present. I find no markings in the text. With protected dust jacket. You
wouldn't believe what I paid for it from a dealer. $200.00 postpaid
insured, no discounts.

Gill, F. 1994. Ornithology. Second edition. A comprehensive
ornithology text, a great reference. In print at $56.00. This copy,
near-new condition. $39.00

Grinnell, J. 1943. Joseph Grinnell's Philosophy of Nature. A remarkable
selection of Grinnell's most interesting writing. 28 chapters ranging from
"The role of the accidental" to geographic barriers to Bushtit calls to
changes in the birds of California. Hardbound with protected d.j.
Includes a beautiful color plate of Black Rosy Finches. $28.00

Jewett et al. 1953. Birds of Washington State. Original hardbound
edition of the standard reference for the state. Very good condition with
minor scuffing to binding, long gift inscription inside. Binding flexes a
bit but is solid. Includes map. $70 postpaid insured. **A second copy,
paperbound, is available for $50.00. The cover is stained but the innards
are very good.**

Hoffmann, R. 1927. Birds of the Pacific States. Arguably the most
readable book on western birds (along with Zimmer's The Western Bird
Watcher), with excellent line art and some color plates. with protected
but somewhat damaged d.j. $18.00

Lawrence, G. 1969. 20th Century Botanical Art and Illustration. OK, not
a bird book. 165-page paperback, unusual collection of biographical notes,
photos of and work samples by the 20th centurys leading botanical
illustrators. A catalog of sorts for an exhibition at the 11th
international botanical congress. $15.00

Maine Audubon Society. 1960. Enjoying Maine Birds. Species accounts for
common species with really excellent line art by Orville O. Rice, site
guides and seasonal bar charts. I picked this up for the quality of the
line art by an artist I did not know. Paperbound with color cover. $8.00

Miller, Loye. 1950. Lifelong Boyhood. Loye Miller was a specialist in
fossil birds but also contributed considerable knowledge to current
ornithology. Includes a chapter on his visit to the John Day valley of
Oregon in 1899. U Cal., hardbound with d.j. (some tears), very good
inside. $18.00

Murie, O. 1979. Alaska Bird Sketches of Olaus Murie. Compiled and edited
by his wife. 57-page oblong flexible-bound paperback. A collection of
color plates and some sketches by the famous artist. Includes excerpts
from his field notes. The chicks, eider heads and tern heads are
especially good. $15.00

Pacific Seabird Group. 1975-1986. Most issues of the Pacific Seabird
Bulletin from 1975-1986, but missing a few. Also a few duplicates, inquire
if you are filling a set. $45 for the main run, $3.00 each for singles.

Pough, R. 1951. Audubon Western Bird Guide. One in the series of three.
This copy has the great Eckelberry plates, protected d.j. with some fading
on spine but not on front cover. $20.00
