Then Harry Nehls upsets all this lovely speculation when he wrote in the
Oregon Alert for Oct 01 1997:

>CANADA GEESE and SANDHILL CRANES are now arriving in good numbers on Sauvie
Island.

Maybe the first flocks have simply overflown the Vancouver BC area.
Interesting no-one saw or heard them (I was really looking for them up in
the NW sky yesterday when it was so clear. Wonder what their route could
have been.
