Growing up in s.e. Michigan, I was just an hour and a half away from
both Crane Creek on the south shore of L. Erie and Pt. Pelee NP on the
north shore. Some consider Crane Creek to be better than Pelee in terms
of variety/quantity of birds and in fewer crowds (though the secret is
getting out!). Personally, I still find both locations equally
attractive to bird. It's good to be birding at the woods in Crane Creek
SP when a nasty rainy mess is rolling down across Lake Erie in early
May. Migrants get stacked up on the south shore of Erie waiting to
cross, and the birding can be absolutely fantastic.
