This is a species the Greater Vancouver (BC) Checklist Area doesn't see a
lot of, usually as flocks in flight past Point Roberts WA. Is a close
approach to land while feeding characteristic of this species?

Now indeed would be a good time. Their average peak date in Vancouver BC is
Sep 29, average departure Nov 05. We're likely on the waning side of the
PAJA curve now.
