the South Jetty of the Columbia River, Clatsop Co., OR

Method: One hour (timed) station count 100m west of "3 rocks" on
top of SJCR using 20x60 Bushnell spotting scope and 8x50 Bushnell
binoculars. Birds were sorted as to flyby, sitting on beach, sitting
on ocean or sitting on river.

Notes: I began the survey later than usual because I waited for a series
of squalls to pass. SABINE'S GULLS and BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES were working
just beyond the breakers. All three jaeger species were present, presumably
attracted by the kittiwakes and Sabine's Gulls. The LONG-TAILED JAEGER was
seen on three separate ocassions and was an intermediate phase adult. The
PARASITIC JAEGER was a dark phase juvenile. The POMARINE JAEGER was an
intermediate phase immature with well seen spatulas. Larger number of
unidentifiable scoters were moving south at a distance.
