An interesting post on Canada Geese, but one point confuses me. I thought
Taverner's were medium dark on the breast and small-medium sized (size of a
lesser but darker). I just saw a flock of 75 Canadas of that description at
the Kent ponds south of Seattle Sunday morning, Oct. 5. These Canadas also
showed a particularly distinct pattern of pale barring across the back.
There were a few Great Basin Canadas about as well, which were notably paler
below and larger. Of the 75, 3 showed a distinct white half collar between
black neck "stocking" and the dusky breast. My impression is that it is most
unlikely I had a flock of 75 Aleutian Canadas and they seemed too small for
dusky's (which, at least in the past, were common at Willapa Bay NWR in sw
Washington in Winter.
