As I'm sure you have heard, there is a big low pressure system developing in
the eastern Gulf of Alaska currently (2330 PDT, Monday, Oct. 6, 1997) with
eventual central pressure of around 970 millibars. It will park itself off
northern Vancouver Island for about 24 hours starting Tuesday afternoon and
then slowly move inland thereafter. I mention this because south to southwest
winds will be sufficiently strong (100 knot peak speeds not impossible around
Van. I.) to cause a high probability of a "wreck" of seabirds along the coast
from northern Washington to northern Vancouver Island. Beach watchers may want
to keep an eye out for wrecks the next couple of days; and some of the pelagics
may be pushed inshore.
