While observing Horned Grebes at Hope Island on Sunday, a swift,
pointed-wing, brown bird whizzed by. I am quite certain that this
was a Merlin, as I watched it for some time, but the behavior was
interesting, and I wondered if anyone had observed a similar thing.
The bird zipped low over the water, just outside the small bay,
as if to harrass a Western Grebe that swam nearby. A few passes low
over the water, and then it flew to and perched in a tree close to
the water's edge. Is this "typical"?
