In fact, landowners can be forced to remove beavers if the water backs up onto
adjacent properties. This I truly do not understand, but I know of at least
one case where it has happened.

Beavers are furbearers that can be legally trapped according to license
requirements, seasons and bag limits. But, they can also be trapped
by a landowner (without regard for these regulations) if the beavers
are doing damage to property
