Tweeters,

The thread on birder involvement is a great introduction to my pitch:

Come pull Purple Loosestrife at the Montlake fill this Sunday 9 AM!

This Sunday volunteers from my church's youth and young adult groups will
be working to enhance a managed "wildland" area near the UW. We'll do
this by pulling the invasive weed species Purple Loosestrife from a pond.
This removes the exotic plant species and creates mudflat habitat for
shorebirds. Note that these dedicated volunteers ARE NOT BIRDERS but come
and get dirty anyway! In four Sundays we've cleared over half the
loosestrife out of "Point pond" in the south east corner of the Montlake
Fill. If you come help out we can certainly finish before the weather
finishes us.

Wear grubby clothes and bring drinking water and a heavy pitchfork (if you
have one, but come regardless). The conditions will be very muddy! I
used to wear ancient tennis shoes before I bought rubber boots.

Directions to the Montlake Fill:

Take I-5 to the 45th st NE exit (the same one for the University of
Washington). Drive East on 45th st NE through the University district and
along the north perimeter of the UW then down a long ramp to a stoplight
at Montlake blvd (there is a golf range straight ahead of you). Turn left
onto Montlake blvd. At the next intersection turn right onto Mary Gates
memorial drive. Drive south to the end of the block and turn right into
the parking lot of the Center for Urban Horticulture. They said we may
park in their lot while we pull. You could also park on the street. Meet
at the parking lot at 9 a.m. Sundays, weather permitting. If you come
after 9 a.m. join us at the work site by following the loop trail around
to the point on the south east corner of the fill.

SEE YOU THERE!
