I led a small group from Rainier Audubon's Bird I.D.
class to Spencer Island today. Among the highlights were a North-
ern Shrike and a Short-eared Owl near the cross-dike, a Sora heard
in the cattails just South of the barn, and a Cooper's Hawk on the
pole jutting out of the barn's roof. It was a fairly good day
for raptors with the Owl and Cooper's hawk being joined by three
Turkey Vultures, several Harriers, three Bald Eagles (2 imm, 1 ad),
and Red-tails. A Raven passing by was new for me at Spencer; and
two Western Meadowlarks that flew over the dike headed South weren't
finding any dry spots to land in, as the tide was quite high today.
