Regarding Tom Schooley's comment regarding deer on Protection Island, we
have spotted them on the east slope of the island on 11/1/96, 11/2/96
(during a cruise for the Washington Science Teachers convention), 11/23/96
and 12/31/96. Additionally, during our clean-up of beach debris on the
island on 12/14/96 we spotted deer tracks and scat. This past Saturday we
saw one on the cliff face on the southeast quadrent of the island. Gary
Boyer, the caretaker on the island has mentioned them frequently. I should
be seeing him later today & will get more info. I would presume that they
arrive from the Diamond Point area and either swin and/or raft over on some
deadheads. I don't believe that there is a resident population.
