I spent a few hours yesterday hiking the Ice Caves trail on the Mountain
Loop Highway. It was amazingly nice with lots of fresh snow in the
hills. Birding was a little slow but the usuals were around. Hermit and
Varied Thrush and the small canopy twitters (Brown Creeper,
Golden-crowned Kinglets) kept us company on the trail. An American
Dipper was foraging on one of the small creeks. The picnic area had the
most variety of birds; Golden-crowned Sparrows, Dark-eyed Juncos,
Steller's Jays and a flock of Red Crossbills. There was quite a flock of
Yellow-rumped warblers moving through the trees too.
