After a tip from Kevin Aanurad (who had ~400 in a hour yesterday) I did a
four hour seawatch today off West Point, Discovery Park, Seattle to see
FTSP. I stopped counting when I reached 1,000 which took 2 hours and ten
minutes.
Just as Kevin had seen the day before all the birds were flying south past
the point. When I left an hour and a half later FTSP were still coming
south at a similar rate, so, in total, in four hours, ~1,900 birds may
have gone past. Absolutely amazing. The birds may be coming in with the
tide, which is high this afternoon.
These birds are a long way off, so a decent spotting scope is essential.
With only binoculars you will only see < 1/20 of the birds.
Also seen: 7 RN Phals; 1 Arctic Jaeger; Heerman's Gulls; and many Dalls'
Porpoises.
