Hi, folks. For two or three years now, Canada Geese sporting white collars with
black alphanumerics have been seen during both spring and fall migration at
Vanderhoof, 100 km west of Prince George, BC. A couple of attempts to determine
who was collaring these geese at what location proved fruitless... until today.
Cathy Antoniazzi from P.G. wrote to Don Kraege of Washington State Fish and
Wildlife. Don phoned back today to say that the geese are being banded by
Mike Eicholdt (sp?) of the Arctic Institute of Wildlife in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The banding locations are near Fairbanks itself. The interesting thing about
this is that *no* collared geese have been seen passing through P.G., only
the Vanderhoof area. It seems the migration corridor for this population is a
narrow one. I would urge everyone to keep an eye out for these collars which
sport a letter by itself and then a series of numbers turned 90 degrees from
the orientation of the letter. Apparently, the numbers may now be a combination
of numbers and letters since they have run out of number combos. I will post
with contact phone numbers and address when I receive them.
