Judy Mullally and I did Ediz Hook this afternoon. We had a RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE at the tip, and a basic adult RED KNOT, 5 SURFBIRDS and a RUDDY
TURNSTONE on the log booms. There were also the usual BLACK TURNSTONES, BLACK
OYSTERCATCHERS, SANDERLINGS and BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS.
There was an adult PEREGRINE FALCON on the radio tower by the Administration
Building which appeared to be an anatum. Three BROWN PELICANS came flying by
for the first I have seen at Port Angeles
We had gone to check for FORK-TAILED PETRELS but there was very little in
the Straits. Also Robert Dunnell on the 12th reported he and his wife on Ediz
Hook had a RED PHALAROPE some PACIFIC GOLDEN PLOVERS and an immature
FRANKLIN'S GULL and we were looking for them without luck.
In the area we still have about 120 HEERMANN'S GULLS, 30 RHINOCEROS
AUKLETS but few MURRES or PIGEON GUILLEMOTS.
The Coast Guard Base is now carding visitors meaning you have to be
active duty military or retired Uniformed Services to get on the base. All of
the good birds except the PHALAROPE and the FALCON were seen from the open
part of the Hook.
