I just spoke with the caretaker on Protection Island who confirmed sighting
a(female?) brown booby at 3:30 pm on Protection Island on Friday 10/17/97.
He spotted it on the large rock on the south side of the island, just
offshore, hanging around with a few cormorants. At 5:30 pm when he
returned it was still there.
The PTMSC is conducting its Protection Island cruise today (10/18/97),
departing at 1 pm & will be in cell phone contact with the caretaker in
anticipation of sighting this bird.
He described the appropriate beak, feet, coloration & markings, indicating
to our on board naturalist that it may be a somewhat immature bird.
More reports after the trip.
