While birding the Alki area on Saturday I came across a female Harlequin Duck
that was "highly decorated." She was standing on a rock near the shore on
Beach St. She had a silver band on her right leg, a black band with teal
lines on her left leg, and a double tag at the base of her upper mandible.
This tag consisted of two round disks, a pale bluish one on the right and a
pink one on the left. She preened for awhile then slid into the bay and swam
along the shore. These bands looked legit. Has anyone else seen this duck
or know why she has so many tags?
