I thought I'd pose this question and see what everyone else uses. Was
having a talk about putting the wrong band size on birds accidentally or
taking an old one off. I know it doesn't happen very often but when it
does it can be troublesome and rather stressful for the bird......and the
bander.

I use a pair of custom made O-ring pliers. I have filed the tips real thin
so they are able to slip between the leg and the band and take off old, or
wrong size bands. It works really well for 0A to about size 5 or 6.
Mostly with passerines. I don't like the idea of using wires (eg. cleaned
twist ties). Slip one on either end of the band, between the band and the
leg then pull as someone suggested, because you pretty much have to have a
third hand to help hold the bird. Pulling the band apart in this fashion
makes me worried that I would break the birds leg and using pliers for this
may further damage it.

Just wondering what other ideas or instruments everyone uses for these
awkward scenarios.
