The Anchorage ravens appear also very regimented in
their distant roost-seeking in winter. They start staking
out their dumpsters about this time of year and come
into town about daybreak. Then, starting about 3:00 p.m.
you can see pairs, groups, singles streaming north to
the Ship Creek headwaters, or thereabouts. I think of
it as "raven quitting time."

Our Christmas Bird Counters stop counting ravens at
noon to avoid duplication.

P.S. Did any of you notice the advertisement in Audubon
Magazine for a book called "The Lost Folk Art of
Taming Crows"? Blurb: "Secrets revealed about how,
where, and when to catch a crow and make it your
talking pet." This ad was on p. 94 of the Sept./Oct.
issue. I'm planning to e-mail Audubon (editor at
audubon.org) and express some dignified, polite
birder outrage.
