Hi Kas - There is very little out there on the nesting biology of black
swifts because their nests are so inaccessible... but here are several
references that might be useful, including an interesting article on the
controversy surrounding the discovery of the first black swift nest. I do
recall several of these papers discussing young in the nest:

Farrand, John Jr. 1990. Discovery of the first black swift nest.
American Birds:44(1)15-16

Foerster, Kevin Scott and C. T. Scott. 1990. Breeding distribution of the
black swift in southern California. Western Birds 21(1):1-9

Foerster, Kevin Scott. 1987. The distribution and breeding biology of the
black swift in southern California. M.S. thesis, Calif. State Univ. (Long
Beach)

Holroyd, G. L. and Tom J. Ulrich. 1993. Dark secrets: discovering the
unusual habits of the black swift. Birder's World 7(5):22-25

Knorr, O. A. 1993(1994). Black swift nesting site characteristics: some
new insights. Avocetta 17(2):139-140

Knorr, O. A. 1993. Breeding of the black swift in the Great Basin.
Western Birds 24(3):197-198

Marin, Manuel. 1997. Some aspects of the breeding biology of the black
swift. Wilson Bulletin 109(2):290-306

Fellow Tweeters,

Anyone out there have any information on the plumage
patterns/development/color for Black Swift nestlings? If no exact
information, suggestions for where to look would be appreciated.
Thanks.
