This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

A PACIFIC LOON was seen on Oct 19 between Silver Beach and Wolf
Lodge Bay on the east side of Lake Coeur d'Alene, Kootenia Co., ID
along ID 97, about 9 miles north of Harrison. The birds were observed
by Pam and Gordon Comrie. Two PACIFIC LOONS were seen in Carlin
Bay on Lake Coeur d'Alene, on Oct 17 by Shirley Sturts, Kris Buchler
and Jan Severtson. Carlin Bay is 10 miles north of Harrison along ID
97. Shirley also reports two BEWICK'S WREN were on the loop trail
behind Nu-Sid-Sen camp, which is about 1.5 miles south of Carlin Bay.

Also in the area, 4 BLUE JAYS are visiting Stan Kvern's feeder in
Harrison, Kootenai Co., ID. If you'd like to see them, please call Stan
at 208-689-3668 for directions. Cindy Wiebush reports another Idaho
BLUE JAY in Clearwater, Idaho Co., ID this past week. ID DeLorme
55, B-5. Another BLUE JAY is lurking in Walla Walla, Walla Walla Co.,
WA. Jim Nestler reports one at his feeder at 1021 E. Chestnut Street
in Walla Walla. The bird was still being seen as of Oct 20. If you go
looking and stop by Jim's, the dog's name is Jessie and it's
recommended you feed her something to make her stop barking.

A PALM WARLBER was seen east of Sandpoint, Bonner Co., ID on Oct
18 by Dan and Ila Svingen and Earl Chapin. The warbler, and four
SURF SCOTERS, were observed along Sunnyside Road. To get there,
follow US 95/US 2 north from Sandpoint about 1.5 miles and then stay
straight (east) on ID 200 toward Hope. At milepost 35, turn right at
Sportsman Access and go under the railroad bridge, then turn left onto
Sunnyside. The warbler was about one mile down Sunnyside right
before the first bridge. The scoters were further down Sunnyside. ID
DeLorme B-2-3. At the Sandpoint City Beach, the trio also observed a
first-winter THAYER'S GULL. The beach is accessed from US 95/US 2
in downtown Sandpoint.

The RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, first seen around Sept 28 at the Walla
Walla River Delta, Walla Walla Co., WA by Mike and MerryLynn Denny,
was seen again by the Denny's on Oct 19. Also at the delta were 135
LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 25 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 2 DUNLIN,
8 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 27 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 2 STILT
SANDPIPERS, and a RED-NECKED GREBE. The delta is just north of
the junction of US 12 and US 730, about 15 miles south of Pasco,
WA. Park in the pull out near US 12 milepost 307 on the west side of
the highway and follow the path to the delta. That same day, about 4
miles north of the delta at the Two Rivers WMA, which is just opposite
the Iowa Dodd beef processing plant, was a "Suckleyi" Merlin. WA

The single NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD seen on Oct 12 just west of
Touchet, Walla Walla Co., WA by Jackie and Larry Goodhew (sp?),
was still present on Oct 18, according to Mike and MerryLynn Denny.
Take US 12 west from Walla Walla to Touchet. Continue through
Touchet and about a mile west of Touchet veer to the southwest onto
Byrnes Road. Follow Byrnes Road about a mile to McDole Road. The
bird was near the intersection. WA DeLorme 40, D-3.

Two female SURF SCOTERS were seen by the Denny's in the Snake
River at Lyons Ferry State Park near the junction of Whitman,
Columbia, Franklin, and Walla Walla Counties in WA on Oct 19. Access
via WA 261. WA DeLorme 55, D-7.

A BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, a single GREATER WHITE-FRONTED
GOOSE, a late SAY'S PHOEBE, a PRAIRIE FALCON, and 5 grebe
species, RED-NECKED, WESTERN, HORNED, EARED and PIED-BILLED
were at Mann Lake, near Lewiston, Nez Perce Co., ID sometime
between Oct 17 and 19. Observers contributing to this list include the
Svingens, Deb Buetler, John and Mary Hirth, and myself. To get to
Mann Lake, follow US 12 into Lewiston, cross the Clearwater River, and at
the traffic light just south of the bridge, head up hill on 21st Street.
Follow it up hill as 21st Street becomes Thain near the Wal-Mart. Follow
Thain and as it goes from 4 lanes to 2, and curves right, turn left onto
Powers Avenue. Follow Powers Avenue about 5 miles to the reservoir. ID
DeLorme 54, A-1.

Two ROSS'S GEESE were on West Pond in Lewiston, Nez Perce Co.,
ID on Oct 18, according to John and Marty Hirth. West Pond is along
the US 12 levy bypass that connects Lewiston and Clarkston, WA.
Take US 12 into Lewiston, cross the Clearwater River and stay right,
avoiding the first traffic light. The next light is 18th Street, turn
right and follow it one mile to the pond.

Eleven GRAY-CROWNED ROSY FINCHES were on top of Cottonwood
Butte, Idaho Co., ID on Oct 19, according to the Hirths. Also there
was a single NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL and soaring GOLDEN EAGLE.
At the base of the butte was a single NORTHERN SHRIKE.
Cottonwood Butte is east of Cottonwood. On the north end of
Cottonwood, along US 95, follow the signs to the ski hill. ID DeLorme

The Hirth's report a HARLAN'S RED-TAILED HAWK along Coyote
Grade in Nez Perce Co., ID on Oct 19 and if you're interested in seeing
a really cool duck, although more than likely not a countable duck,
check out the MANDARIN DUCK in downtown Spokane, on the river
behind the Opera House, seen on Oct 19 by David Heath.
