Got wet this morning, counting Green Lake, Seattle.
Windy (almost stormy) conditions overnight, letting up a bit this morning.
The Green Heron was trying to hide underneath the willows near the "red-winged
Blackbird reeds" (south end section parallel to Aurora Avenue).
Winter water fowl is arriving in reasonable numbers. Especially American
Wigeons increased dramatically this past week. 52 last week, 217 this week.
Also the first Eurasian Wigeons. At least one male and one female (saw the
gray wing lining, she's very "ruddy" compared to the American Wigeon females.
Also one male that has me confused. He may turn out to be a hybrid (AMWI x
EUWI) when he's done molting.
Gadwalls are also up 137 last month, 342 this month. Lots of Milfoil floating
around the lake.
The male Cooper's Hawk posed, balancing against the wind on a branch, giving
me ample time to look at his legs (thick) and compare him in size to the crows
mobbing him on departure (he was a bit smaller).
