And I was wondering why one couldn't use a plastic salad bowl as a
reflector. There are the problems of mounting the mike, and holding the
whole setup, that I haven't thought through yet, but I imagine they're
solvable. Any thoughts?

The easiest and cheapest thing to do is to get a plastic funnel, saw most
or all off the narrow end and put in a cheap label type mike (try to make it
a tight fit). It is a little more permanent than a cardboard cone. Not an
original idea I read it in one of the birding mags, tried it and it worked
well but lost it when we moved to WA from AZ.
