This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

Terry Little saw a RED PHALAROPE at the ponds just north of Reardon,
Lincoln Co., WA, today, Sept 5, in the company of RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES. To get to the bird, take US 2 west from Spokane to
Reardon, then head north on WA 231. The bird was in the east pond
just north of town. See WA DeLorme 88, C-1.

The HUDSONIAN GODWIT and MARBLED GODWIT first observed at
the Walla Walla River Delta in western Walla Walla Co., WA, by Ken
Knittle and later by Mike and MerryLynn Denny on Aug 31 are still
being seen. The Hudsonian represents about the 4th interior record for
WA. These two birds frequent the north end of the delta, hanging out
with the ducks, and require some diligent searching to find. If that's
not enough, a single male RUFF, the second record for the county, was
on the delta today. This bird is heading toward basic plumage. Also
on the delta today was a single GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL. The delta
is just north of the junction of US 12 and US 730, about 15 miles
south of Pasco, WA. Park in the pull out near US 12 milepost 307 on
the west side of the highway and follow the path to the delta. WA
DeLorme 40, D-1.

Just north of the delta, at the McNary NWR viewing pool along US 12,
Mike and MerrLynn saw 219 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE
today, Sept 5.

At Mann Lake, just east of Lewiston, Nez Perce Co., ID last weekend
were a few good shorebirds. Besides the usual fare, there was a single
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER on Aug 29 according to Deb Buetler. Deb
also had a single SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, which was still there on
Sept 1 according to Charles Swift. Also on Sept 1, Charles had 3
COMMON TERN, replacing the 11 FORESTER'S TERNS I saw on Aug
30. Other shorebirds at Mann Lake include Long-billed Dowitcher,
Western, Semipalmated, Least, Baird's, and Spotted Sandpipers,
yellowlegs, and Killdeer. To get to Mann Lake, follow US 12 into
Lewiston, cross the Clearwater River, and at the traffic light just south
of the bridge, head up hill on 21st Street. Follow it up hill as 21st
Street becomes Thain near the Wal-Mart. Follow Thain and as it goes from
4 lanes to 2, and curves right, turn left onto Powers Avenue. Follow
Powers Avenue about 5 miles to the reservoir. ID DeLorme 54, A-1.

Terry Little also reports a few COMMON TERNS at Sprague Lake,
along I-90, in Lincoln and Adams Co., WA today, Sept 5. WA
DeLorme 71, B-8.

John Hirth saw a BEWICK'S WREN at The Nature Conservancy's Rose
Creek Preserve, just north of Albion, Whitman Co., WA last Sun, Aug
31. On the Idaho side, Charles Swift saw 3 or 4 birds in the first
brushy area north of Lenville Road along Spence Road southeast of
Moscow, Latah Co., ID on Sept 4. To get to Lenville Road, head east
from Moscow on ID 8. Lenville Road is well-marked about 0.5 mile
east of the cemetery. Follow Lenville about 8 or so miles to Spence
Road. ID DeLorme 58, C-1.

The first documented breeding BLACK SWIFTS in Idaho were
discovered last week in northern Shoshone Co., verified by Jim Acton
and Shirley Sturts.
