Having spent many years living in California (boo hoo) I agree with
Kelly Mcallister. California Jays live almost exclusively in the
valleys, foothills and suburban areas. Their preferred habitat is
largely oaks and oak-grasslands. As you move up through the foothills,
and into more heavily forested areas (particularly conifers) there is an
overlap zone with Stellar's Jays. Once you are in heavy forest the
Stellar's take over. I would expect that incursions into our area will
follow a, perhaps modified, pattern. It will be interesting to see.
