We just returned from a Tuesday trip to Sunrise, Mt. Rainier. American Pipits were everywhere, especially on the scattered remaining snow patches. Prairie Falcons were fairly common, with 7 or 8 seen, some with close and extended views. A Northern Goshawk sighting was limited to one distant flying view and only a probable identification. Gray-crowned Rosy Finches were present in at least two large roving flocks at First & Second Burroughs Ridges, although our views were in flight only as they always managed to land away from the trails, and visitors are not permitted to leave the trails. A ranger said they have been present regularly in that area for about a week.

We found White-tailed Ptarmigans near the Fremont Mtn Lookout, where the trail crosses the ridge just before reaching the lookout. They were very quiet and still (mid day) and it was only because other hikers had told us where they had been seen that we found the patience to wait... and wait... and finally one called and we located them quickly. Good, close views of one, more distant view of another.

Hopefully the weather will cooperate so others can enjoy these high mountain birds.
