Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This
recording was made Thursday September 18. If you have anything to add
call Harry Nehls at 233-3976.

Strong storms during the week brought conspicuous migratory movements and
displaced birds.

A NORTHERN LAPWING was reported September 13 from the Forest Grove Ponds.
It left soon after and has not been verified.

A YELLOW-THROATED VIREO was reported September 14 from the Trout Creek
Recreation Area on the Deschutes River north of Madras. It has not been
relocated.

An immature BALTIMORE ORIOLE was at Malheur NWR Headquarters September
16. The next day a juvenile SABINE'S GULL was nearby at the Narrows.

Two XANTUS'S MURRELETS were reported flying past the South Jetty of the
Columbia River September 13. That day a MYIARCHUS FLYCATCHER flew in from
the ocean and landed on the jetty.

COMMON TERNS were reported during the week from many locations along the
coast and up to 20 were at Fern Ridge Reservoir near Eugene. A few were
also on Sauvie Island September 14. The only ELEGANT TERNS reported were
three at the mouth of the Rogue River September 13.

On September 15 a flock of BLACK SWIFTS was near Cape Blanco. Two REEVES
were at Bandon over the week-end and two BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were at
the effluent ponds on the North Spit of Coos Bay. Another BUFF-BREASTED
was near the South Jetty of the Siuslaw River September 13. Among the
many birds seen on the September 13 offshore boat trip out of Charleston
were at three jaegers and two SOUTH POLAR SKUAS.

During the September 14 storm a large flock of SOOTY, PINK-FOOTED, and
BULLER'S SHEARWATERS were flying close to shore at Cape Arago. During the
September 17 storm a similar large flock of shearwaters with all three
species was off Boiler Bay, along with 25 SABINE'S GULLS. Among the over
500 gulls gathered on the South Jetty of the Columbia River shorebird
flats September 17 were at least four SABINE'S GULLS and several
KITTIWAKES. A mixed flock of COMMON and ARCTIC TERNS and four PARASITIC
JAEGERS were also in the area. On September 16 a RED PHALAROPE was there.

RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, PARASITIC JAEGERS, and DUNLINS were reported all
along the coast during the week. On September 12 a BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPER and a large flock of PIPITS were on the plowed field behind the
Tillamook Fred Meyer Store. They were there the next day but left soon
after. On September 13 three LONG-BILLED CURLEWS, a PACIFIC
GOLDEN-PLOVER, and a MARBLED GODWIT were at the Bayocean Shorebird Flats
at Tillamook Bay.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was among a large migrant sparrow flock at the
Dayton Sewage Ponds in Yamhill County September 12. An adult and two
immature CLARK'S GREBES were at Fern Ridge Reservoir September 11.
Northern FOX SPARROWS and GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS are now arriving in the
Willamette Valley.

A group of six ROSY-FINCHES was at the Dee Wright Observetory on McKenzie
Pass in the Cascades September 11. A large number of RED CROSSBILLS are
in that area, and on September 10 two WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen
there.

Thats it for this week.
