As a newly avid rower I've found it difficult to view birds while rowing.
Last night I was startled to realize the bird 30 feet away was the
Parasitic Jaeger. And within a minute three were giving chase to a common
tern flock a 100 yards away!

Birds seem to be much less concerned with shells than they are of "face
forward" boats like kayaks. A tower across the bay is always covered with
cormorants that take flight very easily. Kayaking I give it 200 yards or
more and even then some birds take off. While rowing I've come much closer
than intended a few times(facing backwards and all), way inside the limit a
kayak would have triggered them, and they didn't move!
