There have been several cases of rabies in washington this year, almost
all of which have been attributable to bats (which species I do not know).
I know that one case involved a young girl whose case was fatal. There
had been a bat roosting in her attic. The bat was captured and found to
be rabid. The girl could not remember having any direct contact with the
bat. I think it would be extremely prudent to stay away from roosting
bats and also to never touch a wild bat. Rabies is a very unpleasant way
to die.
