Haven't heard of there being pike in Goose Lake,
the one I found the dead grebe in, and if there were I
suspect I would be seeing some fisherfolk. The
pike are being found in more and more wild lakes
around the state, another introduced species
disaster in the making, as they are going to clean
out the species that loons depend on.

A friend of mine who monitors the Common Loons
on Big Lake, north of Anchorage, once witnessed
an adult loon drown its own chick! She was totally
shocked of course. It just kept pulling the chick
under until it stopped resurfacing.

Good question why the likely victims of loon
attacks aren't peering under water assiduously
whenever they are on a loon's territory. Maybe
the most usual attack consists of some warning
stabs, or visual surface threats rather than U-
boat warfare.
