Access into the ponds was not required to see the gull. If you go to the
gate, where you can see into the ponds on the road to spencer, I saw the
gull fly in sit in the water, right in front of me (OK, it was about 40
yards), and then fly off again. Also directly in front of me were 2
juvinile Franklins Gulls, the third was farther down, and sitting on the
concrete railing. So in short if you can get in, your chances of seeing
the bird are probably increased, however it can be (and was) seen outside
the fence today. When it sat down, I noticed two of the important ID
marks, the dark brown hood and the blood red bill. When it flew I could
see the third, it had the dark underwings, and of course red leggs. I'm
sure that the bird didn't do it intentionally, but it cooperated perfectly
for a lifer. First fly by, then land in the water in front of you, scope
on the bird for 45 sec. to a minute, then fly off. I swear this is what
happened, I'm not making it up! I later saw the bird swimming in the water
closer to the first gate at the south end of the ponds.
