Field trip number one
Birds seen on 2 April 1998 at the Montlake Fill between the hours
of 830am and 1130am. Moderately warm, light breeze, partly cloudy
morning.
Total species: 45 (seen or heard).
Common Loon, Gavia immer, feeding at the north end of Lake
Washington near the stadium, mostly in alternate plumage
Pied-billed Grebe, Podilymbus podiceps, saw and heard many
Double-crested Cormorant, Phalacrocorax auritus, many feeding at north
end of Lake Washington
Great Blue Heron, Ardea herodias, lone individual sitting in a tree
near the boathouse
Greater White-fronted Goose, Anser albifrons, lone individual on
the Central Pond
Canada Goose, Branta canadensis canadensis, setting up housekeeping
Canada Goose, Branta canadensis minima (?), "Cackling Canada Goose"
on the Central Pond
Mallard, Anas platyrhynchos
Gadwall, Anas strepera, several on Central Pond
Green-winged Teal, Anas crecca carolinensis, several pairs (at least 5)
tucked away on various ponds
American Wigeon, Anas americana, many on Central Pond
Northern Shoveler, Anas clypeata, many on Central Pond
Ruddy Duck, Oxyura jamaicensis, males and females in alternate plumage
Canvasback, Aythya valisineria, feeding on north end of Lake Washington
Ring-necked Duck, Aythya collaris, 2 males 4 females (2.4.0) feeding at
north end of Lake Washington, near Montlake parking lot footbridge.
Bufflehead, Bucephala albeola
Common Merganser, Mergus merganser, feeding at north end of Lake
Washington
Hooded Merganser, Lophodytes cucullatus, feeding at the north end of
Lake Washington
American Coot, Fulica americana, many many many
Killdeer, Charadrius vociferus, many, including one hen on her nest
near the restoration project
Common Snipe, Gallinago gallinago, two flying across Central Pond
Ring-billed Gull, Larus delawarensis, group of 20 or more flying
high overhead
Glaucous-winged Gull, Larus glaucenscens, arguing over a food morsel
Bald Eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, sitting in a large cottonwood
tree on Foster's Island
California Quail, Callipepla californica, heard several calling in
blackberry brambles near the montlake parking lot just north of
Lake Washington
Ring-necked Pheasant, Phasianus colchicus, heard only
Rock Dove, Columba livia
Northern (red-shafted) Flicker, Colaptes auratus, many
Tree Swallow, Tachycineta bicolor, many, some sitting on nestboxes
Violet-green Swallow, Tachycineta thalassina, many, some sitting
on nestboxes
American Crow, Corvus brachyrhynchos, including one color-banded
individual located in a large tree near the E8 parking lot
Black-capped Chickadee, Parus atricapillus, "dueling chickadees"
heard (only)
Bushtit, Psaltriparus minimus, nest only (not included in today's
species count)
Bewick's Wren, Thryomanes bewickii, including one individual who
allowed us to approach closely for good, long looks
(Long-billed) Marsh Wren, Cistothorus palustris, heard and observed,
also identified nests
American Robin, Turdus migratorius, many
European Starling, Sturnus vulgaris, many
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Dendroica coronata, in trees next to the
Montlake footbridge
Song Sparrow, Melospiza melodia, heard and observed
White-crowned Sparrow, Zonotrichia leucophrys, heard and observed a
small group in blackberry brambles
Golden-crowned Sparrow, Zonotrichia atricapilla, observed a small group
in blackberry/scotch broom cluster near the "beaver trees"
Lincoln's Sparrow, Zonotrichia lincolnii, heard singing in blackberry
brambles between the Central Pond and the north end of Lake Washington
Red-winged Blackbird, Agelaius phoeniceus, many (both male and female)
House Sparrow, Passer domesticus, many
American Goldfinch, Carduelis tristis, sitting in large (coottonwood?)
tree near southern end of Central Pond
House Finch, Carpodacus mexicanus, heard and saw many
