Columbia Estuary Report - 4/05/98

The Lower Columbia Birders went out Saturday morning to Ft Stevens
looking for spring. We had nice weather and plenty to look at.
There were ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS singing everywhere (compared
to just one last week). Two COMMON YELLOWTHROATS were heard at
Swash Lake. Singing TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS and both forms of
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER also seen.

A possible PALM WARBLER flew over the Wildlife Bunker at parking
lot D. It could not be re-located the this morning.

By this morning, there were Yellowthroats everywhere. SAVANNA
SPARROWS are passing through in large numbers at Ft Stevens and
Wireless Rd.

I did a 30 minute this morning (full report in separate post).
While waiting for the tide turn I spent about 10 minutes sitting
on the beach. I was watching 5 SURFBIRDS and was startled by
a rustling rush of air. An adult PEREGRINE, wings folded in, flew
past me about 3-4 meters above my head and headed straight for the
Surfbirds. They flew off in one direction. It flew off in the
other and I was left with the feeling that the Peregrine buzzed
them with no intention of making a kill.
