Subject: Pileated Woodpecker

The day had started tough. Getting crunched in basketball. And then finding
out that the computer cable that Federal Express dropped off would not take
care of my connection problems. I had just discovered that and had come
downstairs in a fine state, when I was stopped by the sight of a Pileated
Woodpecker at our suet cake. It was the first time the Pileated has come to
the suet. I immediately forgot about the other stuff and sat down with the
binoculars and enjoyed the bird. I felt much better.

Later in the day as I was moving the lawn (had to accomplish something for the
day) I heard a song I didn't know and since the binoculars are never far away
I went and found a Fox Sparrow singing. I have seen them mostly in California
where I have not heard them vocalize. It is really hard to say singing because
this bird never opened its beak. Do you think they might be thinking of
nesting near-by?

I use a push mower because it is simpler but also because I can still hear
birds over the sound of mowing. There are still a good number of Varied
Thrushes hanging about and they were great to listen to.
