Rick,
Where exactly did you see the Skylark? I was at American Camp Sunday just
before noon and walked all across the meadow from the Redoubt to Pickett's
Lane and didn't find my Skylark. The guy in the visitor's center said the
best time was at dawn so I returned Monday morning at 6:15 and didn't see
any then, either. I tried at Pickett's Lane and just east of the Redoubt
and was unsuccessful at both places. A big dip. I met two birders from BC
who said they had heard the Skylark population was diminishing because of
pressure from foxes.
I did have one of the more outstanding wildlife experiences in my life
Monday morning at English Camp on San Juan Island. Just down the main trail
from the parking lot I was looking at a Pileated Woodpecker when I thought I
detected a movement behind me by a reflection in my glasses. I turned to my
right and saw nothing behind me. When I turned back to my left, a black
phase red fox was standing less than ten feet away from me. Even my jumping
back did not bother it! It gave me a wonderful broadside for almost ten
seconds then turned to walk down the trail. Two times I whistled at it and
both times it stopped, turned broadside to me and looked at me. It was
pretty amazing! It almost made up for missing the Skylarks. The woodpecker
was also wonderful.
