April 12, 1998, Sunday, 6:52 a.m. Hello, this is Craig Kemper at (206)
789-9255, reporting for a Seattle Audubon field trip on Saturday, April
11, to the lower Skagit. In a small flock of mixed TRUMPETER and TUNDRA
SWANS, between Sunset and Field Roads, just west of Chuckanut Drive, we
observed a TUNDRA SWAN which, instead of having a small yellow spot in
front of the eye, had a large yellow spot, including facial skin and
base of the bill. This was a very unusual looking swan, even without
using the scope. Also on the field trip yesterday, we located one
AMERICAN BITTERN at Green Road pond, observed a CASPIAN TERN over
Padilla Bay, had one immature PEREGRINE, one MERLIN on the Samish Flats,
along with several BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER in breeding plumage with small
numbers of DUNLIN, and observed 18 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE as well
on the Samish Flats. Thank you.
