My wife and I just returned from an Easter visit with her family
in Spokane, we went the long way to get there.
On April 8, at the St.Cloud Ranch recreation site in Skamania
County, we found 2 male RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKERS in the old orchard. At
Dallesport, in Klickitat County, a ROCK WREN was singing. As we passed
the Toppenish Refuge in Yakima County we spotted 4 BLACK-NECKED STILTS
from the Highway 97 shoulder.
On April 9th, we were in Douglas County where we found a pair of
LONG-EARED OWLS at a nest in a locust grove on "K" St., 2 miles north of
the town of Douglas. In the same spot there were a few VESPER SPARROWS
starting to sing weakly. Just North of Mansfield, 3 TRUMPETER SWANS were
in a vernal pond. In Okanagon County, we checked the Little Soap Lake
Road, for Grasshopper Sparrows, but were too early for them. The lakes
along this road did contain a good selection of waterfowl, with thirteen
species of ducks seen there.
April 10, at the Reardon Ponds in Lincoln County there were 4
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and an AVOCET.
Eleven more WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were on a flooded pasture at Four
Lakes, near Cheney, in Spokane County, on April 12. As cruised the
causeway at Crow Butte State Park, in Benton County and found a male
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER and CLIFF SWALLOWS were swarming around the nest
sites under the bridges. Finally we stopped again at Dallesport in
Klickitat Count, and saw 4 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE there also.
