Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This
recording was made Thursday April 16. If you have anything to add call
Harry Nehls at 233-3976.

The peak of the spring migration occurs from mid April to mid May so the
next few weeks should be exciting. During this past week COMMON
YELLOWTHROATS went on territory and migrant WILSON'S, BLACK-THROATED
GRAY, and TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS were reported. Breeding plumaged males of
both races of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER were regular, a few CASSIN'S VIREOS
were reported and some NASHVILLE WARBLERS were in the Eugene area.

Good numbers of both dowitchers and GREATER YELLOWLEGS are moving and
some MARBLED GODWITS and WHIMBRELS were reported.

Several BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were flying north along the Curry
County coast April 14, and a female OLDSQUAW was at New River, south of
bandon that day. The next day over 1000 SOOTY SHEARWATERS were close off
Bandon and 2 TUFTED PUFFINS were on the bird rocks there.

An OLDSQUAW was at Crab Harbor in Tillamook Bay April 12. That day a PALM
WARBLER, 3 BARROW'S GOLDENEYES, and a GREAT EGRET were near the mouth of
the Wilson River. Up to 116 TUFTED PUFFINS were on Haystack Rock at
Cannon Beach during the week. The first BROWN PELICAN of the season was
off Ecola State Park, north of Cannon Beach April 12.

EVENING GROSBEAKS are now arriving in the Willamette Valley but they are
still in fairly low numbers. A number of PURPLE MARTINS were at their
Sauvie Island breeding sites April 11. Among the many migrants noted at
Pittock Mansion in Portland's West Hills the morning of April 15 were
some VAUX'S SWIFTS. Several were over Corvallis April 13.

COWBIRDS moved through the Willamette Valley during the week with a flock
at the Fernhill Wetlands at Forest Grove April 9. An EARED GREBE and a
male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD were there April 11, the same day a
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD showed up at the Briedwell Road Marsh near Amity.

A GREAT EGRET was at Baskett Slough NWR April 12. An early SOLITARY
SANDPIPER was at the E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area April 10.

At least 20 pairs of TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDS are back at their nesting site
at the marsh on the north side of I84 near the Stanfield exit. A large
flock of WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKERS and many PYGMY NUTHATCHES were in the
forest south of Layman Hot Springs near Ukiah April 11. The Spring Creek
forest west of La Grande has been quiet but a GREAT GRAY OWL was there
April 11.

Thats it for this week.
