Now it *really* sounds like a common murre egg. Think about it: how many
speckled eggs do you hear about that are noticibly conical on one end?
And if she got the egg in a rocky cliff area of an intertidal region, then
it's almost certain.

The real trvesty about this is that common murres only lay one egg per
season per pair, and do NOT renest if their egg is lost. They do not
maintain an easily-noticible nest (to speak of). They are cliff-layers.
And adults will leave the nest periodically to feed, but will return to
the nest to brood. At this point, it's probably too late to do anything
about it--the embryo is probably already dead. Sad.
