Hi OBOL & Tweeters: There have a number of posts recently lamenting
(and rightfully so) that the Peterson Western Bird Songs tapes and
others don't often match what our birds sing or call here in the Pacific
Northwest. Not to worry, there ARE other tapes available that were
recorded mostly in Oregon by Eleanor Pugh, and I believe all are available
through the Oregon Field Ornithologists OFO Bookcase, published in the
OFO journal. I don't have an issue in front of me at the moment but
perhaps someone out there from OFO can post the mailing address for
ordering these and the several other locally made bird tapes that I can't
remember the names of:

Birds of Foothill Woodland Edges
Four Flycatchers (Pacific slope, Cordilleran, Hammond's, Dusky)
Wildlife Voices - Sparrows I & II (grassland/desert sparrows & humid
land sparrows)
plus many more in the Wildlife Voices series that you can mix and match
to create your own tape.

Available from Portland Audubon (503-292-6855):

Familiar Bird Songs of the Northwest

Also, as part of the Oregon & Washington Partners In Flight and Region 6
of the Forest Service's annual training to teach folks to do point counts
and bird by ear, we had Eleanor record two sets of tapes for us, one on
eastern Oregon bird songs and calls and one for western Oregon. We
give training attendees copies of these tapes, but otherwise I don't know
what their availability is. Barb Kott of the Mt. Hood National Forest at
503-622-3191 extension 687 will know if these can be made available or
not.

And finally, I have been compiling a list of mnemonics that have helped
me learn and remember many of the bird songs and calls in Oregon and
Washington. I originally posted it to OBOL in 1994 or 1995, and it has
since been added to and updated quite a bit. If anyone would like a copy
let me know and I'll send it as a Word Perfect or ASCII file, or whatever.
For anyone I do send it to, it's a working list, and I am always looking for
more hints to add, especially for those species not yet on my list.
