Thanks Birders,
And thanks to the power of these electronic bullentin boards and
everyones' mention of spring arrivals and especially those recent reports
of Westside VESPER SPARROWS. Tonight I stopped at Steigerwald Lake
N.W.R., at the west end of the Columbia Gorge in Clark County, in an
successful check for VESPER SPARROWS there. I hadn't seen one in Clark
County since I started keeping a "County List"about ten years ago. Two
were in a mixed flock of about 50 SAVANNAH SPARROWS, 5 LINCOLN SPARROWS,
20 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, and 50 AMERICAN GOLDFINCH. Three WESTERN
KINGBIRDS were perched on a fence line and two AMERICAN BITTERNS flew
into the ponds.
Yesterday when I scanned the fields and ponds from Highway 14,
there were no BARN or CLIFF SWALLOWS, tonight hundreds of both species
were skimming the ponds.
Maybe spring is here after all.
