Like everyone else, I have been following the news stories about the
birders captured in Colombia. Yesterday I was interested to read the name
of Thomas Fiore as the one who had earlier escaped. Also yesterday I
finished reading "Red Tails in Love: A Wildlife Drama in Central Park" by
Marie Winn (Pantheon, 1998), a fascinating book about birding in New York
City. Thomas Fiore is one of the major individuals involved in the book and
contributed a chapter which is a month-by-month almanac of Central Park
Birds. The coming together of the two items really put a human face to both
accounts.
