This idea may be too high tech, but here goes anyway.

Go to a Hobby shop and buy a Radio transmiter and reciever. They are
used for steering remote control cars and planes. HiTec makes a two
channel one that comes complete with transmitter, reciever, batterys,
and servos (they attach to whatever you want to move.)
The whole set costs around $70:00 extra servos are about $10:00. The
store may have a used set for $25:00 or so. Tell them what it is going
to be used for.

How to use them:

The servos attach to the doors of the nest boxs, a wire goes from the
servos to the reciever and the battery wire plugs into the reciever.
When the stick is moved on the Transmitter (will work within line of
sight) it moves the servo which opens or closes
the doors.

One problem: Battery life. If you bought a small solar panel it could
keep the battery pack charged. Everything would be mounted on the pole.

Now the next question---is it worth the time and expense?

PS I used this setup to take remote pictures at our feeder. It worked!
