On Saturday August 8, Portland Audubon is sponsoring a trip to Bayocean
Spit in Tillamook. Here are directions for those interested:

We will depart from the Tanasbourne Target store at 9:00 am. Plesae note
that this is a departure time, so be there earlier. The Tanasbourne
Target is at NW 185th and Hwy 26 in Hillsboro--it is very visible on the
south side of Hwy 26. We will meet far back in the lot. The trip to
Tillamook may include a stop for a Dipper depending on caravan size, so
carpooling is encouraged.

I anticipate reaching Bayocean Spit between 10:20 and 11:00. The hike
will commence from Bayocean Spit at 10:30 am or arrival time, which ever
is later. I do not know if we will go up the bay side first, or the ocean
side, so once we hit the split, if you're late, it's your guess (the
damned Wrentits tend to eat all the bread crumbs).

Bring a lunch as we will eat at the South Jetty of Tillamook Bay and look
for alcids and other delightful marine creatures. Beverages, hats, and
sunscreen are a good idea. Conditions can be different the whole way out,
so bring a light jacket is a good idea, and I prefer to wear jeans--last
year we were warm on the way out, then hit a fog bank on the beach.
The hike is about 6 to 7 miles--the only really hard part is the last dune
to the ocean either going out or coming back--there are some smaller hills
in the forest--we will be on sand or old road with rocks.

If you want more info, I'll be able to respond tomorrow or on Thursday
until 6 pm. I will be UNABLE to respond to electronic RFIs after 6
pm Thursday.
