Subject: great gray owl location?

A friend sent me this in an e-mail:

"We met a couple on the summit (Observation Peak) who said this is their
favorite place to hike and they've been there about 20 times before. The
woman said that the last time they were there, about a month ago, they were
in the fog. She heard, called and managed to see a great gray owl in a
stand of trees just below the summit."

Observation Peak is in southern Gifford Pinchot National Forest adjacent to
the Trapper Creek Wilderness. The elevation of the summit is 4207. There
are some meadows in the general area but the Gifford Pinchot NF lists no
great gray owl habitat in this area.

Does anyone know if this could be a viable sighting? Has anyone else ever
seen a great gray in this area? Has anyone seen a great gray in southwest
Washington?
