Columbia Estuary Report 8/11/98

Perhaps the most interesting event recorded this week was
a movement of LADYBIRD BEETLES (with 19 spots) outward along the
South Jetty at about 2/min.

A single BONAPART'S GULL was at parking lot D of Fort Stevens
on Monday. Huge numbers of BROWN PELICANS are gathering at the
mouth of the Columbia River.

Shorebirding around the estuary is still pretty dismal. A small
flock of WESTERN SANDPIPERS (all but on a juvenile) has been hanging
around the ponds. A single SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER made a flyover
on Sunday.
