Subject: Blue Earth DILEMMA

From:

Greetings,
Friends just returned from Blue Earth Lake, B.C. with a
stowaway, a Northwestern Chipmunk -- Eutamias amnus.(subspecies:
affinis. As opposed to the local subspecies: felix)
At Blue Earth Lake, near Ashcroft, B.C. this Chipmunk: "Blue
Earth", "B.E." for short, was reported to be "very interested" in
"hanging around" the engine part of the truck. My friends noticing this,
distracted and discouraged "Little Blue" from that part of the truck.
Perhaps a little too successfully, a 4.5 hour drive later, "BE" is in
Vancouver. under a bed liner in the back of a pick up truck. Now on my
doorstep. To make a long story shorter, the truck was dismantled (liner
removed:-) "BE" was rescued, unharmed (I think)(GREAT caution was
exacted). After the long trip, and the possible "rescue" trauma, "BE"
was assigned to the sage room. (to be left, monitored, and undisturbed
to "recover" :-) "BE" ate some sunflower nuts, maybe nibbled the berry.
"Little Blue Earth" is now resting in a small cage, with some nuts and
water and some Blackberries ... and also a small "blanket" (cloth) in
which "BE" has settled into.
WHAT DO I DO NOW!
Ideally, "BE" would be back HOME. In a familiar territory with
known food caches ... boundaries established, etc. (UNtravelled! :-)
Unable to return "BE" to Blue Earth Lake for a week perhaps two,
it has been my experience that a squirrel away from "home", does not
have a territory to return to... (now a (stowaway) refugee for 2 days)
Random release (in original area), this late in the season is not a
viable option. (remember, it is winter there, next week!:-)
Do I have a guest in the sage room for the winter? Do I charter
a helicopter? Do I release "Blue Earth" in the cat pound?
I would like to have "BE" checked out medically, so I will also
be consulting with Critter Care and Wildlife Rescue, as to what are the
best options, your input would be greatly appreciated.
WHAT IS IN "BLUE EARTH'S" BEST INTEREST????
Also reported at this Blue Earth Lake location was a ferocious half dog
half coyote beast lurking about, and a Red Squirrel paralyzed with a
back injury, pulling itself along with two front paws only, and
apparently surviving and getting along fine. (????) Do I return one to
"rescue"/capture another? (I don't think I can bare to see this Red
Squirrel.) DO I have a guest in the sage room for winter?
Preparing for a madcap expedition(?), Joseph.
