Yesterday, I observed a large mixed species flock foraging in a
group of alders in Olallie State Park near I-90. The bulk of the birds
were small...warblers and chickadees, but two larger birds caught my eye.
Closer inspection revealed that these birds were hatch year Brown-headed
Cowbirds (nestmates). The real surprise, however, was that they were
provisioned by Black-throated Gray Warblers! Does anybody know how
frequently this warbler serves as a host for cowbirds in this area?
