Please find below a tardy posting of sightings at Protection Island from
our Marine Science Center birding cruise of Saturday, August 15th.

Double crested cormorants
they have left their nests on the ridge top of the island & appear
to have constructed more of these archetectural wonders
indicating, perhaps, health of the population
Pelagic cormorants
Great Blue Heron
Harlequin duck
Western Sandpiper
Heerman's Gull
Glaucus winged gull
Common murre
Pigeon guillemont
Marbeled Murrelett (off of Point wilson)
Rhinoceros Auklet
Tufted Puffin (approx. 6, in the water & in the south cliff)
Bald Eagle (mature & immature)

Additionally we spotted two (2) elephant seals on Kanem Spit, the western
extension of Protection Island, as well as many hauled out harbor seals and
one deer on the ridge line.

Remaining Protection Island Sunset Cruises are scheduled for Saturdays:
August 22 & 29 and Sept. 5th. departures are at 6:30 pm from Point Hudson
Marina (downtown Port Townsend) and, as always, discounts apply for Audubon
& WOS members. Child & group rates are available
